Having grown up on the Westside, I talked about my recent move to Koreatown as “moving out” there; by implication, the Westside figures as a kind of central location in my imagination, for better and for worse. Your points about Western and the history of the LA built environment are well put, but I might add one defense of calling yourself “eastside” (as much as the term bugs you). What Jesus might be trying to do is argue for a way of living in opposition to what the Westside represents (cars, suburban space, lawns, anonymity, etc). I don’t know – not having read his stuff nor read his work, I’m not really in a position to say. But there might be a way in which he’s trying to claim an Angeleno identity not wrapped up in the Westside; and even though we are on the old western marches of the city, that’s still east of the image of Los Angeles. It’s a great argument either way.
